International Family Magazine

SOS and Colombia

Dear IF readers,

I have told you about my daughter in Colombia.  I am her sponsor with SOS, http://www.soschildrensvillages.org,  a non-profit organization that helps orphans around the world.  I do not want to use her real name so as I can keep her privacy.  So I will call her “Lucy”.  The name Lucy is one of my favorite from the days of Lucille Ball.  My daughter Lucy’s photos show that same spunk.

And so in this World Tour Stop for International Family Magazine in South America, I wanted to update you about Lucy and her country of Colombia.  Lucy has sent us a holiday ornament and we receive newsletters about her specific country and orphanage.  Just like Brody and Jax, we have started to keep a box for Lucy to keep her things that we collect, so that when we finally meet her she will know that we are ongoing witnesses of her life.

We are brushing up on our Spanish and learning about Colombia.  We are planning to meet Lucy in the next two years.  One of the reasons why we picked Colombia is because my sister-in-law is from Bogota.  I thought this would make Lucy happy to have a relative of her sponsor mother to speak to about things in common.  I can hardly wait to meet her and tell her that I am honored to know her, and she is so very special to our family.

Lucy is very important to me as Jax and Brody.  I too was an orphan.  It makes so much sense to me that my first daughter would be an orphan as well.  I hope I can help her as a child without parents needs someone, anyone.  It can be a minister, a teacher, an older person, a friend.  But they need someone to care like a parent might, unconditionally and forever.  And most of all, that person must be safe for the child.

Children are so vulnerable if there is no one watching over them to keep them safe.  I want to help to watch over another child, another orphan so that she or he might have someone who is looking out for them so that they may say to anyone, “I am special, I have someone who loves me and is good to me.” Then that child might have a safe journey to their dreams and magic.

Keep Lucy in your thoughts for her safe journey,
Cat Wayland
